An inspirational Romance to savor

***

When my writing colleague asked for people to join her blog tour to introduce her new book, I quickly volunteered for the task. I love romance and couldn’t wait to find out more about her book and characters! But I’m jumping ahead of myself. I had the .opportunity to interview Rachel, the soft-spoken author who draws the reader in with her carefully-crafted characters and has them rooting for them from the start.

Let me introduce to Rachel Skatvold, a brand new author with plenty of talent and depth!

Could you share a little about yourself with my readers?

I’m a Christian author and stay-at-home mom from the Midwest. My husband and I have been married for seven years and have two wonderful boys, ages one and four. The kids keep me pretty busy but when I have time, I enjoy writing Christian romance. My version of a Christian romance is sweet and suspenseful with a little touch of comedy and faith weaved in. Other then romance, I enjoy writing encouraging blogs and devotions.

My version of a Christian romance is sweet and suspenseful with a little touch of comedy and faith weaved in.

I understand your novella Beauty Within has just been released. Can you tell us a little about it?

I’d love to! Beauty Within tells the story of Katherine Arnold, a young widow with two children who returns to her hometown in search of a new beginning. Instead she must learn to cope with an overbearing mother, a troubled teenaged sister and fiery small town gossip. When her first meeting with Officer Ryan Hudson ends in a parking ticket, Katherine believes he’s determined to make her life miserable but could God have something else in mind for this unlikely pair? Maybe a second chance at love? Click here for an excerpt.

This novella sounds like more than just your average love story. What are some of the themes in the story?

Some of the main themes are family, healing and forgiveness. Katherine’s character is close to my heart because of how she reacts after tragedy strikes her family. Her heart is broken after her husband’s death but she knows that she must stay strong for her kids. Ryan has also had a difficult past and is faced with guilt over his brother’s accident. Throughout the story, both characters learn about the true power of healing and forgiveness that only God can provide.

What have been the most challenging / rewarding parts of publishing your first book?

Publishing my first book has been a bit of a rollercoaster. The most challenging part has been finding the time for writing and editing. I never dreamed how many drafts I would go through at the end of this process. My kiddos keep me pretty busy so I had a lot of late nights towards the end. However, the most rewarding part was finally receiving the book in the mail. There’s just something about holding that finished product in your hand that’s so exciting. God has opened so many doors for me and blessed me with some amazing friends and family to bring this book to completion. He deserves the praise and I’m so excited for all he has done and continues to do with this book project.

Kudos to Rachel. It takes persistence to publish your own book. I pray her book will minister to widows in a similar situation as well as those who like an inspiring romance story. Who doesn’t? Thanks for sharing this inspirational interview.
    Have a blessed day.

Wow, thank you for all the great responses. I wish I could reply to all of them in different threads but for some reason I can’t.

Anyway, thank you, Mary, Amaia, Pat, Amy, Barbara, Shelli, Kim and Sabine for your comments, encouragements and prayers. It’s great to meet all of you!

Amy, I also enjoy meeting other authors. What do you enjoy writing?

Barbara, Thank you for your encouragement about self publishing! It has been a rollercoaster but I’m glad I did it. I appreciate your prayers as God continues to
    lead me on this journey.

Shelli, I agree with you! I also enjoy reading books like that. With Beauty Within I wanted to include the romance but also have a family aspect tied in. Since Katherine has kids she has to look out for, it makes for an interesting theme. The next book in the Riley Family Legacy Novellas will go deeper into Katherine’s family and focus on her little sister, Sarah. ?

Kim, Thank you for your interest in the book! I’m so glad people are excited about it. I appreciate your prayers and make sure to look for more coming in this series soon!

On one final note, I would love to connect with you all. If you are on social media, feel free to click the links above to get further updates about upcoming projects and events!

I am always in awe of women like you both, Amy and Rachel, who have such deep beliefs. The name of your novella, Rachel, “Beauty Within” says it all. That is where our true beauty begins. It is what mirrors all the beauty we find in the world.

What I find interesting in your story, Rachel is the “second chance” theme. We all need to allow ourselves and others second and even third/fourth chances in Life. Interestingly, your Biblical name reflects this.

Thank you Amy, for sharing. HUGS and good luck to you both. <3

Victoria, thank you for the encouraging words. It’s nice to meet you!

Judy, your kind words are such blessing to hear! I’m so glad that you see the deeper meaning to this story and the message I hope others recognize between the lines. I wanted it to be more than just a romance. 🙂 Blessings to you, Judy.

    Hi Judy,

I love your comments! They reflect the thought that you put into reading my posts. I always feel as if I’m sitting down chatting over a cup of coffee with you, which serves as a respite in the midst of a busy day. It makes me think of the breaks in the teacher’s lounge where I used to work…and it seems as if I’ve casually said, “I’d like you to meet Rachel. She’s new here.” You are so welcoming!

Hope you signed up for that rafflecopter giveaway!

Let’s see, it’s been well over 30 years since I’ve read a romance novel. Remember Harlequins? I don’t think they’d meet the critera for Christian romance. My mother-in-law had what seemed like thousands and even though the plot was basically the same, just different characters, I think for a minute there I was addicted.

I think a Christian Romance Novella would be a much welcome change of pace.

    Great review Amy!!

    Hi Stephanie,
Rachel did a great job of writing her book! And, it’s as you said, a nice change of pace. Also have you heard of those Love Inspired romances? I think they’re in Large Print, too. My mom reads them. They are cleaner and often have a Christian theme running through them. =)
I was so busy this week I only had time to blog once!
    Hope you are doing well!
    Amy
PS I need to pop over to your blog and catch up!

Hi Stephanie. Thank you for commenting and showing interest in my novella! Christian romance is a great genre because you get all the love story but the books are clean and faith based. Beauty Within has some comedy and suspense too. 🙂 It’s great to meet you, Stephanae. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
