Post Title – Julie Hedenborg: The Unexpected Journey from Anesthetist to Podcaster

Note: I came across Julie’s podcast, Everyday Miracles, a few months ago and shared how God ministered to me in the loss of my twins. When we got to talking, I realized she had a story as well, so I asked her if she’d like to be featured in my Friday Friends column.

Who Am I?

My name is Julie Hedenborg and I am a lover of Jesus, a wife, mother, a former Nurse Anesthetist, and I currently host a Christian podcast that features inspiring miracles and testimonies that glorify God.

Trauma Becomes a Catalyst

July 3, 2015 was the day my life changed completely. I was diagnosed with bilateral vertebral artery dissections and an accompanying pseudoaneurysm after a traumatic neck injury. I had several mini-strokes, and was taken by ambulance to the Neurovascular Intensive Care Unit. It was a life-threatening injury accompanied with challenges, amazing God moments, and valuable lessons. I received an undeserved miracle and have very minimal deficits from the incident.

Nature of My Disability

I enjoyed a beautiful career in Nursing for over twenty years until I began experiencing pain and numbness in my body related to a severe scoliosis (Greater than fifty-five-degree lumbar curve). In 2016, my doctors explained that my spine was collapsing. He said I was disabled for my job, and surgery was needed imminently as there was no hope that I would be able to function without it. They explained that two rows of hardware were needed to support my posterior and lateral spine from my sacrum to my thoracic area, and that my mobility, at best, would be that of a seventy-year-old. I would not be able to bend down normally. The surgery would not correct my curve, but it would (hopefully) stop it from progressing. It was very difficult to hear this, especially with two young children and my active husband.

Where Am I Now?

My Scolio-pilates Coach says she would not believe my x-ray if she had not met me in person.  I have no numbness in my legs and, although I have some limitations, I get around beautifully. I realize that I do not know what the future holds, but I try my best to choose to live daily without fear. I do not see myself as “disabled,” but as “redirected,” by God.  I did have to grieve my career, but there are many things about it that I don’t miss (it was a super stressful job). Sometimes God prunes things from our lives that we don’t expect or understand because He has an even greater plan. After my neck injury and close call with death, I truly gave my whole life to God, and just as the Bible promises, “you will find me when you seek me with all of your heart,” I discovered a beautiful relationship with Jesus. Everything changed.

Called to Launch a Podcast

During the painful part of my journey, God would put people in my path that shared their testimonies and they were like life preservers for my spirit, providing hope.  God clearly led me to launch a podcast to share miracles in 2018, which terrified me, if I am honest. Nevertheless, I was obedient. Sharing all kinds of testimonies (Satanist finds Jesus, paralyzed man is healed, ISIS fighter accepts Jesus, amazing provision, people seeing Jesus, people seeing heaven) has been the greatest gift, and has blessed ME more than I could have imagined. The podcast has been broadcasted in over fifty countries marketed only with prayer.

Blessings in my Journey

First and foremost, MY faith has grown dramatically (for all to witness on multiple platforms). As I have prayed for God to show me what HE wants for the podcast I have seen such clear guidance that is simply miraculous in itself. Many times, he will send me 3 of the same topic within a week (overcoming grief, forgiveness, healing, etc.), or He will guide me to people in the most random of ways. My husband says if he didn’t witness it that he wouldn’t believe it. I have met people in passing at airports, with my head in the sink at the hair salon (and hers too as we discussed her miracle), parking lots, oceanside on the rocks in Aruba, and more. I have joked that I could write a whole book on the ways God sends these people to me, at the same time I feel it is this beautiful sacred thing that I am not sure I want to share fully because it feels so special. I know God will continue to lead me.

The second set of huge blessings is connecting with other believers and giving God the glory with them for all He is to us. I feel a special bond with those that open up and share from their hearts and I am truly honored to just be a vessel in publishing their testimony. I don’t believe we get to see the full fruit of our labor while we are on Earth, but at times I get to see feedback from others around the world about how God moved in their hearts through hearing a testimony and it has brought me to tears countless times. It amazes me how God can use something that feels so small to do big things. I am so glad I didn’t chicken out as I would have missed out on all of these beautiful things!

Messages I have for you

  • God is real and He loves you.  He sees you.  He is with you.
  • Realize that thought stirring in your mind (a book, a blog, reaching out to help a neighbor) could be God calling you to YOUR divine purpose.  Ask Him to lead you and show you how!
  • Know that as small as you may feel your efforts may be, that in God’s hands they are powerful (hello, loaves and fishes!). Never underestimate what God can do through you!
  • Take comfort that when you are called by God to do something that He WILL equip you, and while there will be challenges, there WILL be blessings too!  It is so worth it!
  • Life is hard, and the Bible tells us we will have challenges, but if we continue to trust God, and lean into scripture, He will get us through it.  He is always with us.
  • Serving/encouraging others from your own place of trial will spark special unexpected blessings for you!
  • Medical doctors can do great things, but it is important to seek multiple opinions and options.  We are still learning so much about how God created the human body.  Do your research like your quality of life depends on, because it does….and pray.  Pray without ceasing.

Thank you for reading my post!  I hope it encourages you today!  Blessings,

Julie Hedenborg
